Can you Smoke Kratom and is it Safe? Long Term Side Effects

Smoking kratom is possible but highly inadvisable because of the damage it can cause to the respiratory system. Much of the alkaloids responsible for kratom’s benefits are destroyed when the leaves are ignited, which means you will need more kratom to equal your regular dose.

If you decide to smoke kratom please keep the long term effects in mind. There are a wide variety of alternative forms of consuming kratom that are better for your health and much more efficient for obtaining your desired effects.

Smoking Kratom

Smoking kratom is pretty rare, even in Southeast Asia where the plant originates from. This is due to the fact that the alkaloids 7-hydroximitragynine and Mitragynine are lost during the smoking process.

Waste of kratom imo. It’s only effective orally. In two years of use I’ve never seen anyone smoke or insufflate kratom with any positive results.

As you can see, smoking kratom is going to require some extra cash. But let’s say you don’t mind forking out the money because you really want to smoke. You still have one more obstacle to overcome.

Smoking kratom in the US is very uncommon because it’s difficult to find a vendor who sells high quality kratom leaves.

However, not everything about smoking kratom is a downside. The positive aspect about smoking kratom is how fast your body absorbs the alkaloids.

Aside from injecting substances directly into your capillaries (which you should definitely not do with kratom), smoking is the fastest method of ingestion.

When you smoke kratom, the alkaloids are absorbed by your alveoli, transported to your brain, and you feel the amazing benefits of kratom in a matter of seconds.

The health risks associated with smoking kratom don’t seem to outweigh the benefits. If you can wait at least 10 to 15 minutes to feel the effects of kratom I will show you exactly how to do just that later in this post.

Longer Term Health Risks of Smoking Kratom

I may begin to sound bias, but I’m really not. I feel obliged to reveal the whole truth about smoking kratom to ensure you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into if you decide to take the smoking route.

So let’s get to it. Here are all the long term health risks associated with smoking kratom:

  • Tightness of chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent coughing
  • Poor physical activity performance
  • A weak immune system
  • Liver damage
  • Kidney damage
  • Weight loss

Notice how many of the health risks mentioned above are identical to someone who smokes cigarettes. That’s because smoking in general can lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a common lung disease caused by the damaging of the airways and small air sacs (alveoli) found in your lungs.

If you’re a smoker, you’re 12 to 13 times more likely to die from COPD than a non-smoker.

Additionally, smoking kratom leaves is known for producing high levels of tar. The tar is is responsible for releasing harmful chemicals into the lungs that produce many of the adverse side effects of smoking.

Kratom also produces short term side effects. Many of which are produced when taken a dose higher than your body can handle, such as:

  • Body Irritation
  • Seizure
  • Hallucinations
  • Coma
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Coma
  • Muscle aches

Smoking kratom can make it rather difficult to gauge the right dose and therefore leaving you more susceptible to experience short-term side effects. The most common side effects of over ingesting kratom are nausea or headaches, and usually go away on their own within an hour.

Frequent and harmless side effects of smoking kratom may include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constipation

I’d like to point out that even though loss of appetite and constipation may be harmless if they occur once or twice, you should definitely not ignore them. Eat healthy and frequently and drink a lot of water. Kratom is known to significantly dehydrate your body.

How to Avoid Health Risks Associated with Smoking

There are multiple ways to consume kratom without experiencing many of the long term side effects of smoking. Unfortunately, they will not produce the effects as quickly as smoking, but they are more efficient and less of a risk to your health.

The following methods of consumption are great alternatives to smoking kratom.

Toss and Wash (kratom powder)

This is without a doubt my favorite way to consume kratom. However, due to the extreme bitter taste, this method is not for everyone. I like this method because it produces the most potent effects and it does so quickly.

kratom powder

The toss and wash method is exactly what it sounds like. You toss the kratom powder in your mouth, take a gulp of water, swirl it around, and swallow. It’s not pleasant, but you’ll thank me when that massive euphoria starts to kick in.

With the toss and wash, you should be experiencing the effects in about 15 minutes.

Unlike kratom tea, you can’t do much to reduce the bitter taste of the powder. I’ve noticed using cold water or juice helps a bit, but don’t expect much of a difference.

Kratom Tea

If you have the patience to make tea, this is probably the best way to consume kratom. It’s not the most potent method because some of the alkaloids are lost to the heat, but it’s definitely heathier than smoking.

There are a variety of ways to make kratom tea. Simmering is the most common method because it preserves much of the alkaloids, but you can also make Sun Tea or cold brews.

Because kratom tea is in liquid form, your body will absorb the alkaloids rather quickly. Just like when using the toss and wash, you should experience the effects in about 15 minutes.

Kratom Capsules

Do you value conveniency over anything else? If so, kratom capsules are the best choice for you. Avoid the health risks associated with smoking, the time it takes to prepare kratom tea, or the powdery messes of the toss and wash. All you need is water.

Capsules are made by encapsulating kratom powder in a vegetable capsule containing hypromellose, cellulose, and purified water. They do not contain any animal ingredients.

Unfortunately, the downside to kratom capsules is the amount of time it takes to experience the effects. Because your body has to break down the capsule, it may take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes to begin to feel the initial effects.

On a more positive note, the kratom powder in the capsules retains all of its potency. Therefore, producing the same powerful effects you obtain when directly consuming powder using the toss and wash method.
